Finding Idea | Week 11

Find an idea.

The idea I had is to create a font that can be used as a subtitle or in movie posters in a Japanese style like Alaadin's movie poster that can be seen that the title is written in Arabic style presenting the Arabic vibes in the movie, so I wanted to create something similar that can be used in anime or something that presents Japanese culture.
I tried achieving that by using Hiragana and katakana which are a Japanese syllabary and are one the main components of the Japanese writing system.

After working on few letters and showing them to Mr Vinod, Mr Vinod said that the idea is not clear enough and the letters aren't designed in a correct way. so the idea got rejected and I had to start looking for new idea.

Week 13

This time I tried to find an idea with a stronger purpose and I wanted it to be related to my language which is Arabic. so I started doing some research about Arabic calligraphy.




After the research I learned a lot about calligraphy and the differences between different calligraphyes.

So for the idea I got to know that only two main types of calligraphy are used for writing Qur'an while after looking at the translated versions of Qur'an I noticed that there isn't any specific or particular typeface used for translating Qur'an.

So I decided to create a typeface that can be used to translate Qur'an based on the currently
used Arabic calligraphy for writing Qur'an which are Naskh and Thuluth caligraphy.

I chose Naskh calligraphy cause luckily the letters exercise I worked on week 5 was on Nask calligraphy so I already had a bit of  refined letters. and that helped me a lot cause currently time is really limited.

Final Before feedback:

After Mr. Shamsul saw the work he told me that the typeface I created lacks a lot of the elements and characteristics that the Al-Naskh calligraphy has, and how my lines and angles are too sharp unlike the calligraphy. He also showed me a rough example of how the contrast and the element should look using the brush tool after adjusting it.

After Mr Shamsul explained how to how typeface should be designed with taking into consideration all the elements and characteristics that the Al-Naskh calligraphy has, he told me study more about the calligraphy.

Then I used the pen tool and traced the alphabets in "fig 1.1" to analyze the calligraphy with keeping the main elements of the main typeface.

Then I used the guide lines to make sure that all the letters have the same scale.

APPLICATION:


Mr Shamsul told me to apply the outcome on the name of the surahs in the Qur'an instead of applying it on a translated versions of the Qur'an.

General Feedback:

Mr Vinod told us that for our LECTURE NOTES section if we didn't have lectures we don't need to put 'no lectures' in the blog. Our progression and the final outcome should be labeled clearly in the pictures; make sure our pdf's are public to view; make sure our micro-site is active and that it opens in a new window and have a screenshot of the site.

Specific Feedback:
Mr Vinod said that the the letters aren't designed in a correct way and  idea is not clear and strong enough so

General Feedback:
Mr Vinod told us that our eportfolio's should be presented well and document clearly so when other people are reading it they can understand better. Moreover, we should compile everything by next week into the final compilation.

Specific Feedback:

REFLECTION

Experiences 

(Week 11): I spent a lot of time looking for a good idea with a strong purpose but I couldn't find an idea I'm satisfied with.
(Week 12): I thought that my idea for the typeface in Japanese style is going to get approved after showing Mr Vinod some of the letters designed but it was a fail.
(Week 13): Since my idea from the last week got rejected my stress level reached its limits, to the point a started having nightmares because of this project but luckily after a lot of research I found and idea I'm satisfied with. I lost so much time finding the idea more than working on the idea itself .

Observation 

(Week 11): Got too worried since a lot of my classmates told me that their idea got approved.
(Week 12): I observed that recreating an existing idea with a more improved version of it It's not easy to at all.
(Week 13): Making the letters look coordinated was hardest since some of them looked too odd compared to the rest of the letters.

Findings 

(Week 11): Finding an idea with a good purpose is harder than finding the idea itself.
(Week 12): Idea got Rejected :)
(Week 13): I wasn't really satisfied with how the application of my typeface looked cause the title was in English and surah itself is in Arabic so I felt that it looked odd, Although Mr Shamsul is the one how advised me to apply it on the title  since applying it on the text will be too complicated to achieve
