LECTURE NOTES & EXERCISES

Lecture 1: Subject outline and expectations:

04/04/19 (Week 1)

In our first class of Illustration and Visual Narrative we were taught how to trace objects using the pen tool and told about the vormator shapes. We were given 8 shapes to trace and recreate.

Exercise 1: Vormator Challenge:

These were the shapes we were given and we could repeat them as many times as we want without distorting them.

Lecture 2: Balance:

11/04/19 (Week 2)

Mr. Redzwan started off the class for week 2 in which we started to draw out some basic 3D shapes and started adding shadows which is called marker rendering. Then, provided us an image to work with for adding shadows with 3 tone markers according to the light source.

Exercise 2: Marker rendering:

Lecture 3: Chiaroscuro:
18/04/19 (Week 3)

We started off the class by Mr. Hafiz telling us about FabSpace which a place we will visit with our vormator characters. Following with discussing the key points of our previous exercise of shading, shadows and underlining of light and dark.

Exercise 3: Chiaroscuro:

This week was a continuation of the what we learned last week.We were taught to apply the shadows digitally. We were given a pear that we were supposed to trace and create a shadow.
After, we were asked to cut the pear and draw the insides if the pear.We were then given a picture of a skull and asked to merge the two together to create a design.

Lecture 4: Analog drawing - facial expressions:
25/04/19 (Week 4)

Mr Redzwan began the class with showing us examples of different facial expression drawings and asked us to repeat them using a grey marker for sketching and highlighting and outline it with a black pen. He then moved on to explaining to our new exercise which was to draw an object and an animal/insect with facial expressions.

Exercise 4: Analog drawing:

We had to practice drawing facial expressions from the given references:

For this exercise we were suppose to draw 2 different object/insect/animal using facial expressions. I choose to draw a ladybird and an umbrella.

Lecture 5: Trip to FabSpace:
02/05/19 (Week 5)

FabSpace is an organization located in KL that provides services like laser cutting, 3D, UV and laser printing and had an embroidery machine. Our class trip over there was quite interesting as i got to see the 'behind the scenes' of product making.

Lecture 6:
09/05/19 (Week 6)

During our class this week, Mr Hafiz taught us how to create our own custom brushes on photoshop and then worked on our cross hatching and stroke skills by drawing a pear with different ways using our custom brush.

Exercise 6: :

Lecture 7: :
16/05/19 (Week 7)

Mr Ridzwan showed us some references and asked us to repeat and practice them to improve our line strokes and cross hatching as it is a very basic and important skill to have.

Exercise 7: :

While learning about shadows, Me. Hafiz gave us a reference image and asked us to trace it using Illustrator and only focus on the shadows of the image:

Exercise 8:
Narrative Structure:
04/04/19 (Week 8)

Mr Hafiz had asked us to choose a movie and create a presentation of the narrative structure of the movie. We had to select scenes from the movie and match them to the plot diagram and figure out the decisive moment. The story i
