Project 1 - Proposal
(Week 2)

In this module, we were given an opportunity to visit Japan, Tokyo for 5 days to study its culture and create an outcome of any sort based on our findings that interprets the given theme, 'Mythology'.

To prepare ourselves before going to Japan, we had to do thorough research of what we might encounter and what to expect from the culture there. Along with 5 preliminary ideas. All compiled into a proposal that we had to present in class.

FEEDBACK:
Ms. Anis and Mr. Asrizal said that our research questions and problem statements were a bit off. They did not want us to use yes or no questions, not something that could be answered here in Malaysia itself. They had to be more complex and relevant to our topic.

Project 2 - Data Collection
(Week 5-6)

Week 5:

Before the trip, my group discussed a bit on our data collection methods. We thought that since it would be very difficult to find our main topics as they are not located in Tokyo. The Namahage festival had already passed, and also geishas are only found in Osaka. We decided that it would be best to focus on the topic of discipline instead of trying hard to find the Namahage and geisha.

The easiest method of data collection is obviously pictures and videos, but we intend on gaining more than that. We could potentially interview a Japanese student when we visit the Tokyo University of Technology, so we should prepare a set of translated questions for them. Furthermore, I think observations are also a very highly-intimate form of data collection that we could use.

Here are the places we could potentially find data:

  1. Tokyo University of Technology (interview)
  2. Train stations (design posters for good behavior/ manners)
  3. 21_21 Design sight (design process and Japanese design)
  4. Kimonokan Asakusa shop (rental kimono)
  5. Komachi Hair 02 Asakusa Nakamise St. (geisha makeup/ attire)
Ms. Anis approved of our data collection methods and places so all we had to do was wait for the trip.
Week 6:

In this week's presentation, we had to compile all of our findings from last week's trip. Ranging from photos, videos, interview notes to intangible findings.
