Lecture 9: Rhythm, Harmony & Movement:
Lecture Notes
Rhythm
Rhythm in art involves in repetition of elements in a pattern to create visual movement.
4 ways to achieve rhythm:
- Linear elements
- Alternating elements
- Gradiation elements
- Repetition elements
Harmony
Harmony creates flow resulting in a satisfaction feeling in an art composition, they can be achieved when the elements of art are formed together in a unified way.
Movement
Movement is commonly known throughout graphic design as flow. They guide the viewer through the piece of one point to another and hence creating the "movement" as an end result.
2 types of movement:
- Visual flow
- Directional
Exercise:
For this weeks exercise we assigned to do a collage.
The collage should show either rhythm,Movement or Harmony.
I wanted to show the movement of a basketball player in my work.

Final Result
Feedback:
Although i didn't like the final outcome and i felt that the background looked kind of empty, miss sherry said that she doesn't really have a problem with it because it covers the required elements of our topic.
Because i wasn't fully satisfied with the final outcome i decided to do it again:

Final Result
Today's lecture was about dot, line, scale and size which was presented by presented by our classmates.
Dots:
- The Smallest And Most Basic Element Of Graphic Design.
- Two Dots Imply A Structure.
- As Dots Get Closer Together They Start To Be Seen As A Single Object.
- Overlapping Dots Form More Complex Shapes Than Either Of The Individual Dots.
Lines:
- There Are Straight/Curved Lines. Short/Tall Lines. They're The Basic Element Of Any And Almost Every Artwork.
Scale:
- Scale is the size to an object in relation to others objects in design.
Differences:
- Scale: comparing one object to another
- Proportion: compare the elements within the object
Functions:
- Scales are used to draw large objects and dimensions.
Size:
- Make a particular element stand out
- Hierarchy
- Focus
Exercise:
Our assignment for this week was to create a artwork using line work or dots so i wanted to use lines for my artwork.these are some sketches i did during the class to have clearer idea of how i want my artwork to look.
So for this exercise i used a picture of steve jobs as a reference, then i did a rough sketch of steve jobs then i started to figure out how to draw the lines.
Reference Image Used
Result.
Feedback:
After showing my work to Miss Sherry, she said that even though it looks simple but it most be hard to figure out how to place the lines. Miss Sherry also commented on the line of the shoulder and how she liked how i placed it.
Lecture 5: Alignment,Hierarchy,Direction,Perspective:
Today's lecture was about hierarchy, alignment, direction and perspective which was presented by presented by our classmates.
- Hierarchy: refers to the arrangement or presentation of elements in a way that implies importance.
- Alignment: refers to lining up the top, bottom, sides, or middle of text or graphic elements on a page.
- Direction: There Are Three Common Directions Which Are: i) Vertical ii) Horizontal iii) Diagonal.
- Perspective: is a technique for depicting three-dimensional volumes and spatial relationships in two dimensions, as if from the view-point of an observer. The main characteristic of perspective is that objects appear smaller the further they are from the observer.
Example of Hierarchy
Example of Alignment
Example of Perspective
Exercise:
For this exercise we had to show Alignment, Direction, Perspective or depth in a picture.
Before Editing
After Editing
Feedback:
Miss Sherry said the picture is nice and it covers the required elements.
Lecture 4: Texture,Repetition,Pattern
Today's lecture was about texture, repetition, surface and pattern that was presented by our classmates.
Lecture 3: Symmetry,Asymmetry,Balance and Emphasis
Exercise:
For this exercise we had to make an artwork based on one of the 4 topics using only water color or pastels.
This exercise was like a challenge for me because my drawing skills are really limited and it was my first time to use water colors.
Feedback:
Miss Sherry liked the final result and said that she felt like I was having a lot of fun playing with water colors even though it's my first time using them.
Lecture 2: Gestalt
Today's lecture was about texture, repetition, surface and pattern that was presented by our classmates.
- Texture: Refers To The Surface Quality In A Work Of Art.
- Surface: Is What We See In 2 Dimensions And We Know What An Object Is By Looking At Their Surface.
- Repetition: Means Duplicating Or Reusing The Same Elements Throughout Your Design To Bring A Sense Of Unity And Consistency.
- Pattern: Is Simply A Repetition Of More Than 1 Design Element Working In Concert With Each Other.
Example of patterns
Example of texture
Exercise:
For this exercise we had to create a pattern or repetition filled with texture, by printing colors using objects.
1st attempt
2nd attempt
Feedback:
Miss Sherry commented on my first attempt and said that i got the idea of patterns except not using the edges of the paper, so completed my work using the edges of the paper and i think it looks much better like that.
Lecture 3: Symmetry,Asymmetry,Balance and Emphasis
- Symmetry: is when a design can be cut horizontally or vertically but still remain the same shape
- Asymmetry: is when a design has the same number of curves or straight lines but still looks the same
- Balance: is when the colors, textures, visual weight of objects and space are evenly shared in a composition
- Emphasis: is when a certain object or area in an artwork catches your eye and becomes the main attraction.
Example of Symmetry

Lecture 2: Gestalt
Gestalt:
Miss Sherry explained what gestalt is and how we can create from a negative space of a design another design.
Exercise 2:
Feedback:
Ms Sherry liked the position of the shark but she told me to practice drawing legs more:)
Factors that create a contrast:

Lecture 1: Briefing and Contrast
3/4/19
Ms Sherry started off with briefing us with information about the module, then proceeded with an activity to introduce ourselves.
Then we had a lecture about contrast.
Factors that create a contrast:
-Shapes
-Texture
-Cutouts
-Colors
-Angles
-Movements
-Sizes
-Vertical/Horizontal
Contrast can be strong or subtle, it is to create visual interest.

Exercise 1:
To create a contrast piece using only white and black A4 paper.
because we had only to work with black and white papers I was inspired to do pandas.
Trying to figure out how to draw each panda and how they should look.
Final Work.
Feedback:
Ms Sherry thought it was good but lines should be smoother.
